Sewing a backpack with your own hands patterns. Building a backpack pattern, ways to create different models

Backpacks do not lose their relevance for a long time, remaining a trendy accessory. Especially appreciated handmade, because handmade products are unique. For the manufacture of stylish accessory at home you will need a backpack pattern, suitable fabric and decorative elements. Another important criterion for success is the creativity and inspiration of the craftswoman.

To sew a backpack with your own hands, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • needle;
  • threads;
  • thimble;
  • scissors;
  • textile;
  • a piece of dry soap for notes.

It is better to sew a product from the following materials:

  • denim, fabric without elastane is used;
  • cotton holds its shape well, is breathable and pleasant to the touch, which is important for a backpack, because it is worn on the back;
  • dense synthetic fabrics are interesting for their colors, they can be bright and painted, with an attractive pattern; such bags do not need additional decoration.

It is worth paying attention to the fact that the material does not stretch too much under load and does not crumble at a break. The disadvantage of synthetics is that a backpack made from such fabrics collects odors and is unpleasant on the back in the summer. This material does not allow air and water to pass through well, but this property can be used to protect things in a bag from rain by making the surface two-layer.

To create the lining we use:

  • satin – characterized by density, reliability and wear resistance;
  • viscose - more reliable than satin;
  • cupro – in appearance it resembles natural silk, it is soft and elastic;
  • polyester is a durable and easy-to-care fabric that does not absorb dirt well;
  • satin - material made from cotton and silk threads;
  • mesh – has cells, allows air to pass through well;
  • Taffeta is a tough fabric that can hold its shape.

All that remains is to decide how to sew a backpack without expensive accessories. You can make it yourself or remove it from old bags, jackets and other things. For decoration use:

  • buckles, belts and fasteners from old things;
  • fringe made of leather or fabric;
  • a rope twisted from colored threads (can be used for tying);
  • unusual buttons, beads, rhinestones;
  • ropes of different diameters and colors;
  • felt appliques;
  • patchwork, ribbon embroidery;
  • decorative zippers.

When choosing jewelry, you need to take into account that the accessory is subject to increased mechanical stress and gets dirty. It’s unpleasant when an item becomes unusable because of one damaged applique or a lost bead. Removable fittings will make it easier to wash the backpack and allow you to freshen up the item. in a simple way, for example, by changing the color of the cord.

There are two ways to sew a backpack with your own hands: using a sewing machine or by hand. The first option facilitates and speeds up the process of manufacturing the product.

How to use the pattern

If novice needlewomen don’t know how to sew a backpack with their own hands, step-by-step instruction and they simply need patterns. They will help bring your plans to life. There are ready-made patterns of backpacks with dimensions; they can be easily transferred to a sheet of paper in full size.

To create your own pattern you will need the following materials:

  • a sheet of paper (you can use tracing paper or newspaper);
  • pencil;
  • meter tape;
  • ruler;
  • square

You can make a pattern for rounding corners yourself. To do this, you need to draw a circle with a radius of 18 or 20 cm on cardboard and cut out one third of the circle. Using this device, rounded corners are symmetrical.

For a basic backpack pattern, two measurements are enough:

  • shoulder width;
  • height of the back from the waist.

You need to draw a rectangle on a piece of paper, the width of which is less than the width of your shoulders. It is important to note that the backpack should not fall below the lower back, this will be uncomfortable. Then you should draw a vertical line through the middle of the rectangle - the central axis. Next, bend the sheet of paper along the axis and draw the contours of the desired shape of the backpack. You should cut along these contours, you will get a symmetrical pattern. If additional details are planned, such as pockets, a lid or a sliding bottom, they can be easily marked according to the basic pattern, matching the sizes.

To decipher the pattern, you need to know the basic symbols:

  • line with arrow – lengthen;
  • a line with small triangles is a connection line;
  • identical numbers inside the pattern - places where the parts match;
  • cross lines – registration marks;
  • the arrow between the lines is the place of the fold;
  • cross – a place for sewing on a button.

If you decide to cut according to a ready-made, but more complex pattern, you will have to convert it to natural size. It shows the dimensions in centimeters. In this case, it is more convenient to replace the paper with thick fabric. The cut out parts are laid out on the material and outlined with a pointed piece of soap. Before cutting out the parts, you need to find out whether the pattern is given with a seam allowance or not. More often it is given without an allowance, then the elements should be cut out with an indent of 1-1.5 cm. Sometimes the seams on the back are processed with a double turn - first the seam is sewn open, then it is brought out inside out and stitched again. These seams are neat and serve as additional support for the backpack. More allowance should be given for them when cutting.

Development of a pattern taking into account the backpack model

Sewing a backpack with your own hands gives you freedom in choosing styles. It is necessary to understand that copying factory models may be unsuccessful due to the lack of reinforcing parts and machine processing, for example, plastic edging of seams, metal corner fasteners, hard bottom. Even if you make an exact pattern of parts, the finished backpack will be very different.

The strengths of making backpacks yourself are the originality of the models with an individual approach. Also, the advantages of hand-processing products include the artistry of the image, unusual connecting seams, and decorative design.

Children's

Children love animal-shaped backpacks. Cutting out “bunny ears” or sewing button eyes is not difficult, and the child will enjoy it.

On the basic pattern, it is imperative to narrow the top in relation to the bottom. It is better if, in cross-section, such a backpack is close to the triangle with the point up. The bottom is calculated according to the pattern. You can make it in two parts, like an accordion, strengthening the edges of the accordion with strong braid.

It is convenient to tighten the top with a drawstring, and to prevent things from falling out of the backpack, you can provide a hinged lid. A pom-pom decoration looks good on children's backpacks.

If the child wears a backpack to school, then for notebooks and books you can make a lining with compartments and even with fasteners. A fabric that is thinner and non-staining is suitable. If the lining of the backpack is removable, it will be more convenient to wash.

Bag

The most suitable model for a backpack sewn by yourself is a sack. For creative and artistically gifted people, this model is a godsend. The simple design leaves room for creating images, from dreamily romantic to strictly ascetic.

A bag is a drawstring bag with straps. The shape is old and traditional. The pattern of such a backpack is a rectangle. The lower edges of the product can be rounded or left sharp if desired. The size is chosen at the discretion of the master.

There is no need to narrow the top, as the bag is tightened with a drawstring. The fabric should be soft, giving beautiful folds, then the top itself, gathered like a fan, will already be a decoration.

  1. Romantic backpack backpacks are very suitable for slender girls. The straps can be made braided, in a regular braid, and the edges of the bag can be decorated with fringe with beads at the end.
  2. For a mature woman, a tote-backpack can be designed as a duffel bag. Choose the color of the backpack harmoniously with the dress, and throw a painted scarf over your shoulders, wrapping the end around your neck.
  3. A backpack backpack in protective tones is suitable for men who prefer a casual style. A bag made of thick, waterproof fabric will be indispensable for fishing, hunting, and hiking.

You can use several thick ropes as straps, which don’t even need to be sewn. For women - colored ropes, for men - single-color, calm tones. You can adjust the length of the straps by simply tying the two ends, in places where the knot will not rub. Backpacks with such straps look stylish.

From old jeans

Many people are interested in how to sew a backpack from jeans with their own hands, for which there is no pattern. In this case, you can build it yourself or find a master class with a similar model and take the pattern from there.

The simplest sewing option is a backpack without a bottom. In such a product, its function is performed by the front part, increased in volume. The measurements are approximate and individual adjustments may need to be made.

  1. The back is slightly narrowed, 26 cm wide. You can make it slightly rounded in the middle by adding no more than 3 cm on each side.
  2. The front part is cut out in the shape of a semicircle, with a radius of 38 cm.
  3. The valve cover is round. It is better if it is one-piece with a back. It should fall freely and beautifully onto the tight backpack.
  4. The straps are made from the same denim fabric. If there is not much material, you can replace them with decorative cords.
  5. A loop handle can be sewn on if desired to make it convenient to pick up the backpack.

The center of the semicircle and the lower edge of the back are aligned along the axial vertical of the pattern. The edges of the semicircle are hemmed to the back. The top of the backpack is tightened with a cord and covered with a flap. The straps are sewn into the upper and lower edges of the back.

To cut this model you need a wide piece of fabric. If you don’t have one, you can sew it from pieces, so this backpack is suitable for the patchwork technique.

Patchwork style

Mastery of the patchwork technique allows you to make beautiful things from small leftover fabrics. The flaps can be sewn in a chaotic order or in the form of a specific ornament.

It seems unreasonable to specifically cut the fabric into pieces; it is better to proceed from the scraps that have already accumulated at home. Therefore, you should not strive to repeat exactly the models seen somewhere. But you should focus on the backpack you like, improving it at your own discretion.

A backpack made using the patchwork technique, sewn according to a pattern without a bottom, can be decorated to your taste. For example, design the valve in the form of diverging rays or petals. Make the straps from transverse strips or weave them obliquely. Leave the front part plain or make it up of longitudinal inserts that look beautiful in folds.

Before you sew a new backpack, you need to make a pattern for it. It is enough to draw the shape of the future product on a sheet of paper, and then cut it out and transfer it to the fabric. Don't be afraid of ruining the materials in case of failure. Negative experience quickly pays off in acquired skills.

This master class DIY backpack + pattern will be useful not only for needlewomen, but also for those who do not like to wait a long time for packages from the Aliexpress website. The fact is that I, too, am a regular buyer of Ali products, and from time to time I take the opportunity to buy sweet little things at a low price, one of which was my backpack two years ago.

Why I decided to sew a backpack with my own hands, and not buy a ready-made item

This canvas backpack from Aliexpress traveled with me around the world, and I also constantly used it at home when grocery shopping. I got so used to this comfortable thing that I was very upset when I saw how it was already starting to come apart at the seams. This thing was beyond repair, and appearance he was worn out. So I decided to find a replacement for him.

Having searched the vastness of Aliexpress for similar backpacks, I read all the reviews on them. Unfortunately, most of them said that all these bags are not reliable: handles break and locks often fail. After weighing the pros and cons, I decided that I would try to sew a backpack with my own hands. This way I will definitely be confident in the quality of the item and will make it the way I like and feel comfortable. And since I have old backpack– I used it as a sample for a pattern.

Let's sew with me! For me, this is my first experience in sewing such a thing, so it was interesting for me to work on it. I’ll say more - I sat at the sewing machine until well after midnight. The time it took me to sew was about one day with breaks for personal and family matters.

I’ll say right away that sewing an aliexpress backpack turned out to be not an easy task. Therefore, I advise you to take up sewing if you have some experience in sewing. For beginners, this master class will be more difficult to master.

What did I need to sew a backpack with my own hands?

Since during the sewing process I caused a lot of damage in the form of broken machine needles, the first thing I advise you to do is purchase durable needles for sewing. Mine is number 110 “for denim and tarpaulin.”

Fabrics and accessories for sewing a backpack:

  • Thick raincoat fabric with water-repellent impregnation– 50 cm. It will set the main tone (color) of the backpack.
  • Thick raincoat fabric with water-repellent impregnation - 30 cm. This protective print will interestingly complement the backpack.
  • Lining fabric – 50 cm. You can choose a color in contrast. For example, I have always liked bags with bright and unusual lining.
  • Spunbond or isolon – 50 cm. This fabric will give rigidity and shape to the backpack.
  • Rep tape 40 cm and length adjusters - 2 pcs. for pens
  • Metal lock 75 cm.
  • Metal lock 20 cm for pocket
  • Stripe
  • Threads in color - 1 spool

Sewing tools for sewing a backpack:

  • machine needle No. 100 - 110
  • foot for sewing on a zipper - single-arm
  • sewing tools: seam ripper, scissors, tailor's pins

I spent 270 rubles on all fabrics and accessories. I did not purchase locks, handles and energy flex, but took them from an old backpack.

Energoflex, or isolon, is a foam base for the back and bottom of the backpack to add rigidity. You need 40 cm of it. It is sold in the construction department, perhaps you still have it after laying the laminate or

2. I cut out each pattern piece in triplicate.

3. I sew three layers of fabric together along the edges, and process the open sections using an overlocker or a zigzag stitch. I do steps 2 and 3 with each part of the backpack (I don’t sew the back and bottom yet).

4. Next, I put a layer of energyflex on the back (part 3) and bottom (part 5) of the backpack. Which needs to be quilted together with raincoat fabric and spandbond, with this I will secure it and give rigidity to the parts. Then I cover the top with lining fabric.

5. This is what the back of the backpack looks like from the front side. I immediately fix the handle on top (pattern with seam allowances 3 x 19 cm).

6. I make two pockets from raincoat fabric: I cut out a section of 17 x 36 cm, make a fold at the bottom in the middle of each pocket and sew them onto the lining. I sew the lining inside the back, securing it all the way around the edges and in the middle.

7. I attach two handles of the backpack on top and on the sides of the back.

8. Now I turn to processing the front of the backpack. I take the shelf (part No. 1), unfasten the 75 cm lock, put it with the front side to the front and secure it with pins around the perimeter as in the photo. I sew the lock on a sewing machine using a special single-arm foot for sewing on a zipper. Then you can fasten the lock.

9. I take the side panel (part 4). I cut a piece of raincoat fabric 5 x 74 cm - it will close the lock on top. I duplicate this section with spandbond, fold it in half and machine stitch it to the side panel.

10. I find the middles of parts 1 and 4 (shelves and sides), make marks with tailor's chalk, and align them in the center.

11. Place parts 1 and 4 on top of each other, right sides inward, aligning the chalk marks. I secure it around the perimeter with pins.

12. Now the lock needs to be unfastened.

13. Using a sewing machine, I sew the lock to the side using a special single-arm foot for sewing on a zipper.

14. I fasten the lock. I take the lower part of the front (part 2), find the middle, and make marks with chalk. I connect these parts together on a typewriter.

15. I take a ready-made pocket. I mark the place for the pocket with chalk. I did this by eye, attach it where it is convenient for you. I attach the pocket to the front with pins, then with a sewing machine.

16. I take the bottom (part 5, it needs to be quilted, as I showed in paragraph 4 of the article) and the front part of the backpack. I combine these details in the middle.

17. I fasten the parts together with pins, then using a sewing machine.

18. It turns out like this “basket”.

19. I unfasten the lock. I cover this “basket” with a lid - the back (part 3). I fasten them together with pins and on a sewing machine.

20. That's all - my backpack, which I sewed with my own hands, is ready. I can safely use it and not be afraid that the handles will come off!

Why is it worth sewing a backpack using an aliexpress pattern?

Honestly, I really liked the result. Then my family, seeing this backpack, also asked me to sew the same ones for them. My daughter had to sew exactly the same one; she chose the colors herself in the store. From the photo you can tell what her favorite color is. It turned out bright for winter and lifts the mood on gray cloudy days.

If you have a desire and a little experience in sewing, definitely sew. Since in terms of quality it will surpass its original from aliexpress. Compared to my old one, it holds its shape much better. The locks can also be installed much more securely, and it will last you much longer. So feel free to use this backpack pattern.

And another compelling argument is that now I can carry my laptop in a backpack. The fact is that my laptop did not fit in my old backpack, and this was a real problem for me. Since my work involves a computer, I have to take it with me on trips. And now I can easily collect all my things in one backpack, and throw my laptop in there too. It's incredibly convenient! You don’t have to collect a bunch of shopping bags; everything fits in one bag.

A backpack is a comfortable and versatile item that is suitable for children and adults. Stores offer all kinds of models. But it happens that you don’t like any of them. In this case, you can sew a backpack yourself. The most simple pattern a backpack made from jeans is built from the cut of the pants. There is no need to rip out the seams on old jeans. It is enough to separate the lower part from the upper.

We sew a simple children's backpack with our own hands using patterns

For beginning seamstresses, we offer a small master class on sewing a children's backpack.

The pattern consists of two equal rectangles. The upper part will be tightened with a lace. This backpack is suitable for a boy and a girl.

Necessary materials:
  • 2 rectangles of fabric, measuring 28x35 cm.
  • 4 pieces of non-woven fabric 5×5 cm.
  • Lace – 2 m.
  • Metal blocks or eyelets, tongs, threads.

Glue interlining to the bottom corners of the rectangles. We process the cuts with an overlock or zigzag seam.

We fold the parts right sides together, fasten them with a needle and mark an indentation along the top edge of 5 cm. Sew the parts along the long sides and one short one up to the indentation line.

Iron the side seams.

We make a drawstring by turning the top edge 2.5 cm and ironing it.

We sew it at a distance of two cm from the edge.

Mark the locations for the eyelets and make holes.

We put the washer on the wrong side, and on the front side we place the grommet with the convex side up, and clamp it.

We thread the cord into the hole and pin it with a pin. We thread the cord into the drawstring from left to right.

Now we pass it through the second hole, and direct it into the drawstring on the second side. We hide the ends of the cord.

Ready backpack.

You can sew a backpack of this model from any fabric you like. If desired, it can be supplemented with pockets. If we are sewing a backpack for a girl, then it can be decorated with beads, appliqués, ribbons, etc.

We are trying to make a roomy backpack from leather and denim

Denim and leather backpacks will always be in fashion. That's why we offer patterns women's backpack from these materials.

The photo shows a leather model.

Necessary materials:
  • Soft skin.
  • Fabric for lining.
  • Buckle, zipper, 10 metal scallops.
  • Belt tape.

We cut out the leather parts shown in Fig. 2. Made of fabric - the main part of the product and the bottom.

Glue and sew a zipper to two leather strips, as in Fig. 3. It is designed to fit in your pocket. We attach one strip to it, and the second to the backpack, after inserting the buckle, as shown in Fig. 4. Connect the sides of the main part.

Sew the lid by inserting the strap. Leave a hole to turn it out. After this, on the front side we make another line at a distance of 1 cm from the edge, and sew the cover to the back of the main fabric (Fig. 5).

We glue the handles, and over the place where they are attached we sew a rectangle of leather 5×10 cm. Then we sew a leather strip along the bottom of the backpack, as in Figure 6. We sew the bottom to it.

Sew the lining pieces together, leaving a small hole. Fold the backpack piece and lining right sides together and sew along the top edge. Then we turn it inside out and sew up the hole.

We straighten the seam and sew, stepping back from the edge by 1 cm. Insert the scallops, pass the cord through them, as in Fig. 7.

The leather backpack is ready.

The most common way to sew a backpack from jeans is to take the top part of them. We insert the belt into the belt loops and sew up the bottom. The result is a bag-bag.

The second version of the backpack is made from flared trousers. We insert the trouser legs one into the other and get a double bag. The bottom can be made either wide or narrow, at your discretion. We process the upper part to secure the fasteners and straps. We sew the latter together in the upper part, and in the lower part we separate them in different directions and sew them at the bottom seam.

You can sew a backpack for fishing and hiking with your own hands. To do this you need:

  • Waterproof fabric (nylon, polyester, cordura).
  • Lining fabric.
  • Accessories (carabiners, Velcro, zippers, buckles).
  • Nylon threads.

First you need to make a pattern. To draw a pattern, it is better to take tracing paper or graph paper.

The pattern of a regular hiking backpack includes the following details:
  • Back.
  • Front end.
  • Sidewalls.
  • External pockets.
  • Straps.

When the pattern is ready, we sew the parts according to it, while adding the necessary equipment.

Some tips for equipping a hiking backpack:
  • Fastenings for necessary things are best placed on wide belts stitched vertically along the product.
  • To make the backpack comfortable to carry on your back, we line the back of it with ventilated fabric and sew in thick foam.
  • It is better to choose fastenings from metal or plastic. The zippers are made of plastic, because they jam less.
  • The straps can be strengthened using modular fastenings.

Today, the most popular among the many accessories is the backpack bag. An indispensable thing not only in the city, but also for various trips. Buying a backpack bag is not a problem, but for those who love needlework, it is much more interesting and enjoyable to sew it with your own hands, especially since the choice of materials always remains with the needlewoman. Therefore, a hand-sewn accessory has an individual design without losing its functionality.

How to make a women's transforming backpack with your own hands?

To make such a transformer you need to prepare:

  • fleece;
  • a piece of neoprene measuring 55 cm x 140 cm;
  • a piece of leather;
  • a piece of matting 160 cm wide and 45 cm long;
  • zipper 35 cm long;
  • three buckles:
  • as well as threads, pins, scissors, a ruler and two ready-made pens with carabiners 85 cm long.

We draw a pattern of three parts. Two rectangles measuring 33x23 cm and 43x13 cm, a circle with a diameter of 28 cm.

The dimensions of all parts include seam allowances.

Next steps:

  • We cut out one round piece from neoprene, matting and adhesive and glue them together using an iron, placing a circle of adhesive fabric between the neoprene and the matting. We do the same with pieces measuring 43x13, cut from leather, neoprene and glue. In a rectangular glued piece, we make a side seam and attach a circle to it, 1 cm away from the edge.
  • From neoprene and matting we cut out two pieces of 33x23 cm, which we sew together along the long side. We attach a zipper to the resulting two parts, without bending the sections to which we glue, and then sew two strips of leather measuring 2x44 cm.
  • Now we sew down the side seams of this piece and attach two buckles to different ends of the zipper. To attach the buckles to the bag, we cut two parts from leather. Each part consists of two rectangles measuring 6x45 cm, connected by a 2x2 cm jumper. We insert buckles into them and fix them with glue and an iron, and then sew them along the side seams.
  • For the third buckle, you need to cut a belt loop measuring 2.5x5 cm from leather and sew it to a blank made of glued parts (the bottom of the bag). Now we connect the bottom and top of the accessory by stitching from the wrong side, joining the bottom side seam with the top seam. The bag is ready.

We sew for a child

For your baby, you can design and sew a beautiful backpack that transforms into a bag with the help of a handle.

We will need:

  • two types of fabric: plain and with ornaments;
  • harsh material and padding polyester for compaction;
  • cord to match the color of the plain fabric and four zippers.

The accessories required for manufacturing consist of a magnetic clasp, three buckles, two half rings, two carabiners and one fixing element for the cord. The tools we use are thread, scissors and a sewing machine.

Uncover

  1. We cut out seven rectangular blanks from fabric with an ornament. Two pieces for the back pocket 25x25 cm, for the front pocket 16x25 cm, for the side walls 15x32 cm and one blank 8x130 cm for the fabric shoulder strap.
  2. From plain fabric we cut out one blank for the back and front walls of the backpack, 25x32 cm. We duplicate parts for two types of belt loops measuring 8x15 cm and 8x10 cm, as well as for a backpack belt 8x80 cm.
  3. We will sew the upper part of the backpack from two pieces of 25x25 cm, from which we cut off the corners of 7 cm on each side.
  4. For the bottom of the bag, draw an oval 28 cm wide and 16 cm high.

Sewing steps

  • For sealing the lid, bottom, two walls, loops and backpack straps we cut out one piece at a time from the rough stuff. Additionally, we seal the bottom and back wall with padding polyester. We quilt the three blanks for the bottom together and set them aside.

  • We sew zippers on one side to the pocket blanks. We sew the pockets to the front and back walls of the backpack, from the front side. Carefully align the pocket and pin it to the wall. We put a braid on the upper half of the zipper and attach it to the main workpiece. The result was two blanks with pockets.
  • We sew the side sealed parts to the back wall and overlay the sections. For belt loop blanks, we turn the sections inward, fold them in half and stitch along them. We insert frames into the finished loops and sew them to the back wall.

  • Now we prepare the backpack straps. To do this, we fold the sections from the long sides inward, then fold them in half and iron both parts. We insert a zipper between them and stitch.
  • We sew a workpiece consisting of a back wall and two side walls with a front wall and a bottom. We turn it inside out and attach to it a strip of 8x80 cm, intended for the lace with pre-folded edges, and departing from the top edge about 5 cm.
  • We sew together the parts of the backpack lid, iron it, insert the upper half of the fastener, decorate it, and then sew it to the main piece along with the backpack straps. We attach belt loops with inserted half rings on the sides.
  • We insert the second half of the fastener into the front wall. Now we sew the lining, adding a pocket with a zipper. We place the finished lining inside the backpack, bending the top edge by 2 cm, and stitching it back about 5 mm from the edge. Then we retreat another 5 mm and make a line along the strip for the lace.

photos

  • We insert the cord with a pin inside the product, and we drag the ends through the fixing device, tying the ends with a knot.
  • Now we sew the shoulder strap. We bend the sections inward, fold them in half, iron them and stitch along the front side.
  • At the ends we install a buckle for adjusting the length and a carabiner.

The bag is ready.

  3. Pieces of fabric of various sizes for pockets, paws and head. For the top pocket and lining side of the ears - 50x100 cm, lining fabric for the paws - 50x50 cm and for the bottom pocket - 50x90 cm.
  4. You also need a backpack tape - 270 cm, a zipper - 50 cm, a semi-automatic fastener for the tape - 4 pcs, Velcro - 50 cm.
  5. In addition, you will need thread, scissors, pins and a fabric marker.

Sewing

  • We cut out the muzzle from a 47x37 cm cut. We draw on paper and then cut out the eyes, nose, ears. Apply the resulting details to the fabric, trace and cut out. We attach the resulting blanks to the head using a curly seam.
  • Then we cut out two pieces from lining fabric and one of identical size from moisture-resistant fabric. We sew the ear parts together with the lining fabric and set them aside.
  • We pin the belt tape on the parts. We sew pockets and a belt loop with a half ring into one of the lining blanks. We attach the zipper between the lining parts and the front parts. For convenience, we sew on pieces of grosgrain ribbon. We sew the lining blanks around the perimeter, folding them right sides together. We sew the ears to the muzzle.

  • Preparing the parts for the paws. To do this, we cut out four parts for each paw: two for the lining, one main piece from terry cloth and one from moisture-resistant fabric.
  • We sew the main terry and one lining, folding them right sides together. Then we fold the sewn parts right sides up and make another line. We place the second lining blank face up, and on it the sewn blank with the terry side up, stepping back from the edge 2-3 cm, and a blank made of fabric that does not allow moisture to pass through, face down. We fasten all the parts with pins and draw an oval shape for the paw from the bottom edge. We cut and sew along the perimeter, do not touch the top cut and turn it inside out. The result was a paw with a pocket. We do the same with the remaining three paws.

Sewing a backpack with your own hands is a fairly easy task that even novice seamstresses can do. After reading this master class, you too will be able to cope with this task. So, how to sew a backpack yourself?

This master class will tell you about sewing a medium-sized backpack. This size is perhaps the most optimal. The sketch of the backpack is shown in the picture above, and then you can find the pattern for this product. You've probably already noticed that this is a great DIY backpack option for hiking!

Necessary material for sewing a backpack

Before you begin the sewing process, you need to prepare the following materials:

  • upholstery fabric, size 0.45x1.6 m;
  • a piece of leather;
  • a cord with a diameter of about 7 mm and a length of 1.1 m;
  • keeper tape, the size of which reaches 1.5 x 0.04 m - it will be necessary for backpack straps;
  • 2 length adjusters for belts;
  • 1 large carabiner clasp;
  • 8 blocks, with an internal diameter of 7 mm;
  • 2 buckles with a peg, the size of the buckles should be 3cm;
  • 2 half rings with a diameter of 4 cm.

If we talk about upholstery fabric, then there is no need to use new one to sew a backpack with your own hands. For this purpose, it is quite possible to cut out some old things whose material you like. Most often, old jeans are used to make valves and pockets. If you are going to sew a backpack for your child, then his favorite one is perfect for this purpose. old clothes, which has become small, but has not yet worn out at all. But when sewing, you should remember that a children's backpack should be slightly smaller in size so that your child can wear it comfortably.

But how can you sew a backpack with your own hands if you don’t have patterns? To do this, go to the next step and familiarize yourself with the backpack pattern.

Pattern

This is what our backpack pattern looks like:

This pattern shows the following details:

  • valve;
  • pocket;
  • main part.

The same pattern shows all the dimensions of these parts. However, in addition to the dimensions of the parts of this product, which you plan to sew with your own hands, you need to know the allowances. The most optimal size of allowances for cuts and seams is 1 cm, with the exception of the pocket cut, which should be 2 cm, and the upper sections of the main part of the backpack, the allowance of which should be 6 cm.

Cutting

Before you start cutting out the parts of the backpack, you need to know how many of them are needed. So, the main part of the product that you intend to sew with your own hands is needed, one pocket is also needed. But the backpack flap parts, like the pocket flap, need two identical pieces with a bend - this is necessary in order to ensure a pleasant appearance of the backpack even when you open it.

If you decide to make valves from old denim, then you should take into account the fact that denim is a rather thick material, which is why working with it will be somewhat more difficult than with others. However, the advantage of denim is that it almost never goes out of style, which will provide your backpack with versatility. In addition, you can experiment with the color scheme of the jeans, for example, sew the valves from a material of one shade, and other decorative elements from a different shade.

You can also sew all the parts of a backpack from old jeans, but in this case the main part should be made from several thin pieces.

Now let's talk about skin. Why is it even necessary? The answer is quite simple - we will use it to edge both flaps of the backpack, and leather will also be used to edge even smaller elements. The entire description of the necessary leather blanks can be found below.

So, you will need the following leather blanks:

  • a strip measuring 0.6x0.015 m, which will edge the backpack flap;
  • a strip whose dimensions reach 0.4x0.015 m for edging the pocket flap;
  • 2 belt loops with parameters 6x8x3 cm (these parameters are indicated in finished form);
  • 2 patches, with finished dimensions 6x12x3 cm;
  • 2 belt loops that will be needed for the half rings, with the finished dimensions being 8x10x4 cm;

It is worth knowing that when you cut out leather parts you should not make allowances. It's also worth noting that if you're not thrilled with the idea of using leather, you can use some other material for this. For example, you can also use the same old denim for edging.

We sew a backpack

So, when all the parts of the backpack are cut out, you can start sewing them. However, here's what you need to know to do it right:

  • first you need to turn the allowance that was made for the top cut onto the front part;
  • then carefully fold it over and stitch it using a sewing machine;
  • immediately after this, it is necessary to warm up the iron thoroughly and iron all the allowances of the bottom and side cuts;
  • It is worth ironing the allowances only from the inside out, while leaving the allowances untouched along the short cuts, which are located in the corners of the pocket of this product;
  • then fold the backpack pocket;
  • in this case, the fold line should be laid on well-ironed edges, after which you need to iron the lower and side folds;
  • immediately after this it is necessary to make small seams in the corners;
  • After such seams are made, you will need to iron the corner folds again.

We work with belt loops

After the above work has been completed, you will need to fold the short belt loops in half (wrong side in), and you need to tuck the allowance that you made for the top of the belt loop along the longitudinal section. After this, you need to stitch the edges of the belt loops in the right places and trim off the excess allowances.

Now we make a hole in one of the belt loops into which the buckle pin will be inserted. The hole must be made at a distance of about 2 cm from the end of the belt loop. Immediately after this, the belt loop can be inserted into the prepared buckle. Then we fold the remaining tip of the belt loop so that the belt loop ends up being 4 cm long.

After you have done everything, you need to tuck the belt loop to the pocket of our backpack. Note that the belt loop should face up.

Now we proceed to the second belt loop, in which you need to make a hole exactly in the middle, and insert the belt loop into the buckle. Now we make a seam across, which should be 1.5 cm from the bend. Then the belt loop needs to be sewn to the front side of the backpack. The belt loop should be in the middle of the stitching with which the valve is sewn, and look straight up.

Then we sew the pocket into the desired place, so that the bends of the folds are not caught. Now let's start working with the valve.

Working with the valve

First you need to sew two valve blanks together and then edge them with a leather strip. After this, the valve must be connected to the main part of the backpack and ironed to the bottom. The pocket valve must be made in the same way.

Working with the main part of the backpack

After the flap and pocket are sewn in the required places, you need to fold the main part in half and sew on the sides. In the upper part, you should carefully tuck the seam allowances inward and also carefully stitch them.

We work with stalemates

Now we begin to fasten our backpack. As you already understood, making a backpack with your own hands is quite simple, but some difficulties can be caused by a large number of different elements, which is why this master class turns out to be a little long.

Carefully fold the patch on the flat side and sew it on top of the backpack flap. In this case, the pata should be about 3 cm on the backpack valve. The pata is sewn onto the pocket in the same way.

However, what kind of seam needs to be made? The same as on a children's briefcase with Velcro - initially a seam is made around the perimeter, in the form of a square, and then along two diagonals. This can be seen in the image below. Then we insert 3 blocks into each patch, which are intended for the buckle pin.

We fold the belt loops for the half ring in half and carefully tuck the seam allowances. Then we sew the belt loops and cut off the excess allowances.

After this, we wrap the finished belt loop around the half ring and fold it in half. The next step is to lay the backpack out on a flat surface and place all the bottom corners between the belt loop halves. Then we sew the belt loop securely.

Working with straps

The keeper tape must be folded in the shape of the letter V. The sharp end of this letter must be sewn to the upper edge of the back of our backpack. In this case, the seam must be made strictly in the middle. We insert the ends of the keeper tape into the length adjusters for the straps. We pull one of the ends of the belt through the half ring on one of the corners of our product, and attach a carabiner clasp to the other end.

Next we tighten the upper part of the backpack. To do this, you will need to insert blocks along the upper perimeter at a distance of about 10 cm from each other, and 4 cm from the edge of the backpack. Then we insert the cord there, and tie knots at both ends so that it does not come out.

And now we have finished sewing our backpack, and the master class on sewing it has come to an end.
