Kolyadka is a Christmas ritual song, an ancient Slavic analogue of Western Christmas hymns. Carols are ritual songs, part of the so-called calendar cycle - the most ancient and stable part of Russian folklore. All carols can be conditionally divided into “Christ-glorifying” (Christmas) and “sowing” (pagan) carols. The first ones are dedicated to the Nativity of Christ, these are the carols to which we are accustomed. The latter, as a rule, are more archaic, associated with the pagan cult of fertility. Their main content is wishes for the harvest and prosperity in the new year. Pagan carols reflected dependence on natural forces and, in fact, were an appeal to them, the gods responsible for the harvest - after all, the life of a medieval peasant directly depended on the harvest. The word “Kolyada” itself is a name; this, according to many researchers, was the name of one of the fertility goddesses in the Slavic pagan pantheon, whose holiday was celebrated on the day of the winter solstice. The name of the deity addressed by carolers in different regions could differ: Tausen, Avsen, Vinograden. Based on the traditional refrains of Russian carols, which usually repeat one of these names, each carol can be classified according to geography: Kolyada - Kursk region, Vinogradie - Arkhangelsk region and Russian North, Tausen - Ryazan. It was forbidden to sing carols outside the “New Year’s” ritual.
The well-known custom of caroling at Christmas appeared after the Baptism of Rus' during the rethinking of pagan customs in the context of Christian culture. Judging by the musical and harmonic structure of Christ-glorifying Russian carols, most of them are of Ukrainian origin. To this day, in the south of Russia, Christian carols are more common than pagan ones, and the tradition of caroling at Christmas is better preserved there. The melodies of pagan carols, as a rule, were very simple, so that they were easy to remember: musically, they were not too different from other folk verses, songs and jokes. Christ's carols are somewhat more complex musically.
In ancient times in Russia and Ukraine, everyone caroled at Christmas time: both adults and children, but they caroled different groups: separately women and men, separately teenagers and children. It was believed that the more carolers who came into the house per day, the better. They started caroling on Christmas night, immediately after the service, and continued until Epiphany. The owners were supposed to thank the carolers with treats, which were never shared; all the gifts that the carolers collected during the day, they ate together.
Pagans should not be allowed into the house
They did not immediately divide into Christ-glorifying and sowing carols. For example, pagan meaning and style are visible in some folk traditions celebration of January 14 - the day of St. Basil the Great, when the New Year was celebrated according to the old calendar. Despite the memory of the Orthodox saint, caroling on this day followed a completely pagan ritual: early in the morning children ran into the house, threw grain at the icons, cackled like geese, depicted domestic animals - all this, according to pagan ideas, contributed to fertility. Sometimes the carolers dressed up in unusual costumes: fur coats turned inside out, scary masks. You can still see such processions in the Carpathians. The meaning of such dressing up is also archaic: a caroler dressed as evil spirits personified a dead man, an ancestor who helped “fertility.” As a rule, they dressed like this for the New Year, January 14, and on this occasion they sang exclusively sowing, that is, pagan carols. This custom was widespread not only in the Carpathians, but throughout Russia, only in our country it was condemned by the Church. “New Year’s” carolers were not allowed into the house, but were given treats outside the threshold or through the window. In addition, those who went to Christmastide in a “guise” were required to plunge into the “Jordan” at Epiphany - a specially cut down in the river and consecrated ice-hole: to wash away sin. “Christ-glorifying” carolers, on the contrary, were invited to the huts.
Unlike dressing up in disguise, the “Christ-glorifying” carolers walked in procession with star of bethlehem, which personified the worship of the Magi to the Infant Christ and was accompanied by the singing of Christmas carols and the troparion of the Nativity. Although there are Christ-glorifying carols that do not contain Christmas stories, but only wishes for prosperity and wealth. Mixed versions are also often found, where “Christ walks through the arable land and sows crops,” and the Mother of God helps him. Most likely, these are ancient pagan carols, later converted into a Christian way. From the pagan past there remained a chorus, the text of which could also be mixed: “A carol came on the eve of Christmas.”
Already in the past
The tradition of carols is also associated with such a phenomenon as the nativity scene - a theatrical performance that conveys the Christmas gospel story in the form of a puppet theater. In the original, the nativity scene is mobile puppet show, three-tier box with screen. Traveling through villages, he showed a performance during which carols are repeatedly sung, indicating the appearance of one or another hero, and only when an angel appears is the Christmas troparion performed.
Unfortunately, the tradition of singing carols in Russia has died. If we go to Western Ukraine, to the Carpathians, we will see that almost everyone there still carols at Christmas. In Russian villages, the custom of caroling is a thing of the past; in cities, this tradition is being revived only in a theatrical form. I have been collecting folklore for about 30 years and have never seen anyone caroling in our villages; I can only find old people who caroled in childhood and remember how to do it. Of course, Christ-glorifying carols are not just folklore, they express living faith in Christ, and it must be very strong in order to manifest itself in all areas of life.
