The best natural nail polishes. Revision: safe nail polishes Sophin Space Sand - a cocktail of sand and cosmic pollen

The first pastel pink nail polish was patented in 1916. Over the next hundred years, varnishes have changed significantly: today their palette includes over 300 shades, including matte, textured and holographic textures. Manicure has become an art, but every woman can master it. Let's talk about how not to get confused in the assortment of nail polishes and about little tricks for using them.

Nail polish color and fashion trends

Color matters. And although modern fashion no longer dictates the rules for combining manicure with wardrobe, color type of appearance and time of day or year, it is still worth adhering to some formalities:

Shades of the nude palette (beige, coffee with milk) go with everything and are ideal for everyday life; this group also includes classic French;

Dark shades (black, graphite, plum, malachite) are suitable for everyday life if they fit into the color scheme of clothing;

Flashy colors (lemon, light green, orange) require a non-everyday occasion and are used to create youth images - they are absolutely not suitable for a business dress code;

It stands apart - Coco Chanel recognized only this color and called it universal, modern nail experts agree, but clarify that a manicure in red tones must be done perfectly.

Select the desired varnish color in the “Color Shade” filter to narrow your search. Remember, modern nail art proclaimed permissiveness. The trend is both the classic French jacket and its modifications, as well as oriental ornaments, floral and animal prints, geometric, ethnic, abstract patterns, monograms and artistic painting. A riot of colors and unlimited flights of imagination!

Advantages of traditional varnishes

Although gel polishes have skyrocketed to the top of the popularity chart, traditional nail polishes still have a place in the makeup bag. Why?

Any manicure, even the most extravagant, can be done quickly - ordinary varnish does not require drying in UV lamps.

Removing such varnish takes a minimum of time; a regular product and a cotton pad are enough to carry out the procedure.

In view of the above advantages, manicure can be done as often as you want, adjusting the color of your nails to your wardrobe, mood or time of day.

Professional nail polishes, among other things, meet the highest quality requirements, are durable, flexible and manageable when applied, do not contain ingredients harmful to health and do not damage nails.

Professional varnishes CND, AURELIA, DEBORAH LIPPMANN, KONAD, OPI, ORLY, the full range of which can be found in the “Brand” filter, are presented in our store luxurious collections: glossy varnishes for nails, matte, metallic, pearlescent, with the texture of liquid sand, for a jacket (see the “Types of varnish” filter). Be bolder, emphasize your individuality!

Manicure tricks

To make the varnish last as long as possible, do not forget to degrease nail plate and cover it with base.

Bright varnishes will be more saturated, and faded ones will become richer if you use white varnish as a base.

Don't neglect top coats. Their task is to protect the manicure from damage and prolong its life.

They often use traditional nail polishes, explaining their choice with a rich palette, rich colors and resilience. With the advent of modern technology - and enthusiasts who care - these benefits apply to "green" varnishes. The best are in the ELLE selection.

Cute little nail polish bottles are filled to the brim with chemicals. It's bad for the environment, for nail technicians, and for your nails. The cheap preservative formaldehyde and its resins increase the risk of developing cancerous tumors of the nasopharynx, the solvent toluene is harmful to the nervous system, the toxic solvent dibutyl phthalate is bad for the liver, kidneys, reproductive organs and nervous system, the plasticizer camphor can cause allergic reactions and dizziness. Therefore, more and more manufacturers are refusing to use harmful components. The “3-free” label means the absence of formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phosphate. The 5-free formula also does not contain formaldehyde resin and camphor. We have selected 11 brands that think not only about trends, but also about the health of clients and manicurists, not forgetting about animals.

“We believe in rock and roll, Britain and fashion,” begins the autobiography of one of the main players in the nail market. If you share these interests, this is the place for you. Two British women - entrepreneur Sasha Muir and manicurist Noni Creme - founded the beauty brand Butter London in 2005 in Seattle. The unusual palette, decent quality and 3-free formula attracted the designers and received a pass to London and New York fashion weeks.

During pregnancy, Australian model Kim D'Amato decided to surround herself with everything natural. It worked with food and cosmetics, but it was not possible to find eco-varnishes. I had to take matters into my own hands. Kim opened an organic nail spa in New York and launched a line of vegan 5-free polishes Priti NYC. They dry quickly, last a long time, contain a UV filter. The salon soon closed, the polishes remained and were loved by Lady Gaga and Stella McCartney. A little later, D'Amato came up with a soy remover (the American ELLE called it the best ) and launched Priti Princess children's polishes.The range now includes more than 150 different shades and textures, and the brand supports local organic farms and collaborates with charities that help women and nature.

As teenagers, Ginger Johnson and Liz Pickett suffered adverse reactions to toxins found in certain brands of cosmetics. Growing up, we spent ten years working in fashion, beauty and marketing, until four years ago we began producing non-toxic nail products. The palette doesn't even have forty shades, but Ginger + Liz is still loved by Beyoncé, Madonna and Katy Perry.

Life in Southern California, where the sun shines 350 days a year, is unthinkable without a pedicure. Nail stylist Debbie Levitt knows this firsthand. Five years ago, she began producing Sheswai 5-free varnishes, which are easily recognizable by their wooden caps. The products are not tested on animals, and Levit donates a portion of profits to environmental organizations Nature Conservancy and WWF.

Spending a holiday in Greece and returning without bottles labeled Korres is a difficult task. Moreover, under the leadership of John and Lena Korres, they graduate not only natural remedies for skin and hair care, but also strengthening nail polishes with myrrh, trace elements and vitamin B5. The formula is free of silicones, acetone, phthalates, formaldehyde, camphor, toluene and xylene. 23 shades don’t allow for much to roam around, but they will form the basis of the collection.

Architect and herbalist Melissa J. Hertzler wanted to help her husband cope with skin irritation after daily shaving and prepared an aftershave at home, since store-bought cosmetics did not have the desired effect. The recipe was a success, and Melissa decided to turn her kitchen experiments into a professional business. In 1995, the Honeybee Gardens brand appeared, the range of which includes varnishes for water based. Because of this, they take longer to dry: the maximum effect is achieved after 4-6 hours, so Herzler recommends doing a manicure before bed. The line includes 25 classic shades, almost all pearlescent. The best part is that you don’t need a special product to remove them; regular vodka is enough.

Zoya

In 1979, chemist Mikhail Reizis and his wife Zoya emigrated from Russia to the States, where the former pianist received a cosmetologist's license. Seven years later, the couple opened a small beauty salon, where Mikhail created anti-wrinkle cream, shampoo and conditioner, super-resistant non-toxic varnishes and a quick-drying top coat. Zoya became the first brand to eliminate all three harmful ingredients, and later the other two. The assortment includes 400 shades - hardly anyone has more.

RGB Cosmetics

One day, Gina Carney got tired of her favorite nail polishes being discontinued. She started mixing shades on her own and received compliments. In 2009, the RGB Cosmetics brand launched with 5-free polishes that are not tested on animals. With the participation of nail stylist Jenna Hipp, a system was developed for selecting nude varnish to match the skin tone of the hands: the result was four dense Nail Foundations and four translucent Nail Tints. Seasonal limited editions remain in the permanent collection: there are currently 61 shades. An important plus is that RGB Cosmetics also has the Elle Magazine Genius Awards 2012 in its collection of awards.

What are “safe varnishes”?

Varnishes with the formulation 5-free (there are also 3-free, 7-free and even 9-free) do not potentially contain harmful substances- formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, phthalates, camphor.

Phthalates, and more specifically dibutyl phthalate, are added to nail polishes for flexibility when curing. At the same time, this substance passes through intact skin and can cause irritation. It is believed that when prolonged contact- including the air component - causes changes in the nervous system. The harm has not been scientifically proven, but the substance is already banned in the European Union.

Toluene makes nail polish easier to apply, but also penetrates the body through vapor and skin, causing at least... However, the concentrations of both of these substances vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and have concentration limits that are also still safe.

Formaldehyde and formaldehyde resin are potentially carcinogenic substances that help bind pigment. The use of varnishes containing these components is generally not recommended for pregnant women. In addition, substances can.

The last component is camphor, a seemingly almost natural substance that is obtained from the bark of the camphor tree. It is because of this that the varnish dries and shines. In nail polishes, camphor is usually found in low concentrations, but can cause irritation if it comes into contact with damaged skin, as well as dizziness, nausea, and even cause liver damage if inhaled over a long period of time. In a standard half hour of a home manicure, most likely, nothing bad will happen to you, but for female workers nail salons- in the risk zone.

Zoya Nail Polish in Channing

Tanya Reshetnik

chief editor of the "Beauty" section

I got Zoya polish with fine shimmer in the shade Channing. I must say that I myself haven’t painted my nails for a year and a half and am used to a long-lasting coating that I can easily wear for a month. But after double extensions and a traumatic parting with the extra length, I decided to give my nails a rest. So testing a “harmless” varnish seemed like a timely idea. Especially on my suffering nails, which after all the manipulations became thin, brittle and uneven.

I applied the polish in two layers without a base and a fixing top. And Zoya showed itself to be a great guy - it lasted exactly three days without chips or abrasions. In comparison with a long-term coating it sounds ridiculous, but compared to standard varnishes and for my lifestyle, the period is more than decent. I think the fine shimmer added to the longevity of the polish, and perhaps the cream shades last less. But no one canceled the base and fixer.

I liked applying the polish without a base or topcoat - I love it when the manicure doesn’t look like a gel, but looks subtle. But the very next day the varnish fell off along the edge of the nail. In general, this would happen to many regular varnishes, if you do not use fixatives. When I applied the Essie coating over the varnish, everything lasted for me as always - for about a week. Any polish with topcoat lasts the same amount of time on my nails, so I didn’t notice the difference.

JINsoon Nail Polish in Cool Blue

The main advantage of the varnish that I got was the color. It transformed from light blue to bright blue when viewed in different lighting conditions. Then the problems began. I repainted my nails with it four times. The first time I applied only 2 layers, waited 40 minutes, and after I tried to change my clothes (very carefully), there was practically no varnish left on one hand - it had all transferred to my clothes.

The second time I gave it a full two hours to dry and then went to bed. In the morning I could calmly study the texture of my blanket from the fingerprints on my nails.

The third time I applied it with my “dangerous” drying topcoat, which I use all the time. The varnish spread beyond the boundaries of the nail onto the cuticle, but this time it lasted the longest. During the first day and a half, it chipped a little from the tips of the nails, but overall nothing happened to it during the week - no strong chips or snags.

Finally, I tried applying it with Kure Bazaar base and top coat. The polish dried quickly, but on the third day it began to chip on several nails. For my taste, the texture of the varnish is too liquid - it spreads under the top coat, so I have to clean up all the resulting stains. A narrow brush helps a little - you can draw the outline quite accurately with it, but such brushes are not for everyone. If you're short on time, it's important to remember that even with a dry top coat, you need to give the polish a couple of hours to completely cure.

I also undertook to test the varnish under the most honest conditions - without a base or topcoat. It was applied quickly and tightly - if you are a patient person, then they will be able to paint your nails evenly in one go, if not, then the second layer will correct all the flaws. It took me about 30 minutes to dry, I watched a video on YouTube for an hour, then I fell asleep, and in the morning the manicure was in perfect condition. On the second day, I noticed chips at the tips of my nails, which were growing on only one finger. On the fifth day it was completely sad to look at him. In principle, I could fix only one finger and calmly go through with an imperfect manicure for another week, but I got bored.

The second time I tried to apply the varnish as it should be - with a base and a drying topcoat of the same brand. It felt the same, except that the end result was a little more glossy. Durability increased to a confident three days without chipping, and then the varnish behaved the same as in its original form. In my opinion, this is a good result for a simple coating.

What's the result?

Safe varnishes, like conditionally dangerous ones, are different, which means this is only one thing - the absence of ingredients from the stop list does not make the varnish less durable, this is influenced by other components. Modern brands of safe varnishes are not at all similar to pseudo-natural production - the shades and textures are in no way inferior to mass production, which means that for almost any nail color you can find a healthy alternative. The base for the varnish and the top coat will extend the life of the manicure for another couple of days, but these two products must also comply with the 5-free formula, otherwise the main varnish will not be useful.

You need to understand that nail polish is 70% chemical solvents and contains four main types of ingredients: polymers, solvents, plasticizers, pigments. Only some of them may be more or less natural. Therefore, it is more correct to speak not about “ natural varnishes for nails”, not “eco-friendly nail polishes” and certainly not about “organic nail polishes”, but only about more and less safe versions of the same type of product. You can read a conversation with Kirsten Hüttner about what we generally use to paint our nails.

However, good news for anyone who is hesitant about switching to these safer options or not: the absence of formaldehyde or dibutyl phthalate does not reduce the consumer properties of the varnish, which is why we buy it. It paints your nails the same color you want, stays on your nails for a long time, after which you can wash it off and repaint it. Everything we love.

We tried three varnishes: German Benecos, American 100% Pure and American water-based varnish Acquarella; all three are new to the Russian market.

Benecos Nail polish “Expressive mint” and “My secret” (490 RUR)

It produces decorative cosmetics with natural ingredients, some of which are certified by BDIH. Varnishes, as we have already said, cannot be organic, but these do not contain the main harmful substances characteristic of traditional varnishes: toluene, phthalates, formaldehyde and camphor. However, Benecos varnish contains nitrocellulose, which is one of the culprits of a yellowish coating on nails with prolonged use of varnish.

In terms of the quality of application, durability and washability, the varnish does not differ at all from ordinary varnishes, but the smell is much more neutral. The first coat goes on quite well, but a second coat is needed for a beautiful application. The downside is that the thin round brush is not the most convenient for wide nails. The tips of the nails begin to “crumble” already on the second day, but for the author of these lines, no polish lasts perfectly for more than two, maximum three days. Result: high-quality varnish without harmful ingredients with a large palette and good application.

100% Pure Nail polish “Veloria” and “Jem” (740 RUR)

For its natural and beneficial compositions, beautiful colors and packaging and a wide range decorative cosmetics. In the case of varnishes, the brand also did not disappoint: the thick matte pale pink varnish “Veloria”, which we received, made a very positive impression. If your hand does not tremble when applying, the surface will be smooth and very dense, and the color will be saturated. It is necessary to apply several layers, because... the second one looks much better than the first one, which is uneven.

The composition of the varnish can be considered safe: it does not contain toluene/toluene, phthalates, formaldehydes, camphor and even gluten - it is not entirely clear what the latter has to do with nail varnish. The 100% Pure company orders its polishes from American production and, perhaps, that’s why it decided to mention the absence of gluten, an allergy to which is very actual problem in USA.

This varnish also contains nitrocellulose, but its effect is noticeable only after a long time, so we cannot confirm it. One of the downsides is a rather pungent odor, which is more likely associated with conventional varnishes.

Acquarella Water-based varnish “Plasma” and “Hot Chocolate” (RUR 1,190)

Acquarella left a lasting impression on us. After being water based, we didn't expect anything good from this type of product. And in vain: Acquarella turned out to be a very pleasant varnish without the chemical-alcohol smell of solvents.

Along with the polishes and remover, we also received a conditioner, with which we need to prepare our nails for application. If you use regular nail polishes, then you need to apply Acquarella conditioner for a day, then wash it off and reapply for three days. After this, you can paint your nails with colored varnish. At first, this procedure seems dreary and generally unnecessary, but as a result, you no longer want to paint your nails with anything at all - they become pink, smooth and generally look much better than before conditioning.

As for the varnishes themselves, they also do not contain toluene/toluene, phthalates, formaldehydes, camphor, nitrocellulose and petrochemical products. In general, the composition of these varnishes is very laconic: water, acrylic-polymer emulsion, non-toxic dyes: titanium dioxide (active ingredient); may also contain iron oxides and mica.

What’s nice is that the varnish does not require a base or fixing, and the best part is that you can dilute it with water and thus use the entire bottle. Of course, you can’t call it very durable, but it lasts quietly for about two or three days, and if the varnish is light, then it can not be renewed for quite a long time. Unlike 100% Pure, which has a very thick texture, Acquarella polishes are more liquid, and not all colors apply equally well. The photo above is an example of applying two layers of red “Plasma” varnish, and it is simply magnificent, but this is what another varnish looks like, “Hot Chocolate” (to be fair, we note that this is the right hand, which always turns out worse, but the varnish itself not as successful as red).

Another disadvantage is that you can’t remove the polish with a regular nail polish remover; you’ll have to buy a separate one (which, however, doesn’t smell like chemical solvents, so that’s rather a plus). Well, the price, of course, but in such cases you can always remember that prevention is always cheaper than treatment, and it is better to use a more expensive one natural cosmetics than to suffer from toxic contamination of the body later.

Manicure for a woman is as important as makeup. The modern market offers a huge selection of nail polishes. Their brands are so diverse that you can easily get confused among them. There are even special ratings for such products.

A good nail polish should:

  • apply evenly;
  • dry quickly in a few minutes;
  • be resistant to detergents and moisture;
  • Do not change the appearance of your nails for at least 5 days.

Manufacturers often place metal balls in a bottle of high-quality varnish. They help to loosen the coating well and store it for a long time. The bottom of a bottle with a quality product should be flat, and the brush should be in the shape of a half-open fan.

Brands of nail polishes from leading manufacturers often come with vitamins and additives to prevent the plates from peeling. coating with such components can have both pros and cons.

Advantages

Advantages of high-quality varnishes:

  • the presence of a convenient cylinder-shaped cap and steel balls in the bottle;
  • shelf life up to 2 years;
  • medium-long brush that does not touch the bottom and does not leave streaks;
  • transparent bottle with an easy to read label;
  • liquid composition that drips in one drop;
  • uniform coverage without air bubbles and streaks;
  • absence of harmful chemical compounds;
  • quick and easy application and removal.

Flaws

The negative aspects included the presence in the composition:

  • phthalates, which, while ensuring flexibility after drying, can also harm the nervous system and cause skin irritation;
  • toluene, which not only helps to apply varnish, but also leads to nausea;
  • carcinogenic formaldehyde and formaldehyde resin, which help bind pigment and cause allergic reactions;
  • camphor, which allows the varnish to dry quickly and shine, and also causes dizziness and skin irritation;
  • natural mother of pearl;
  • calcium.

There are also other disadvantages:

  • short-lived coating (2-7 days);
  • frequent smudging and chipping;
  • long drying;
  • Strong smell;
  • possibility of allergies.

What makes a safe varnish different?

Brands of such coatings are distinguished by the presence of nitrocellulose in them. This item considered protective and forms a hard layer on the nails. Safe varnishes may also contain healthy proteins and oils. These water-based coatings secure the dye with polymers rather than solvents.

If the varnish label is marked CAB, this means that it is made from nitrocellulose. A coating with this component does not leave yellow spots on the nails.

The safety of varnishes is evidenced by such inscriptions as:

  • big 3 free;
  • big 4 free;
