Elephant mask. Elephant mask Elephant head mask print

Once again, kindergartens are preparing another series of children's matinees with fancy dress costumes.

Parents will once again have to prepare a mask for the matinee. It is better to do this with your child together.

The topic of today's post is a master class that answers the question of how to solve this difficult problem.

We need to turn mask making into an educational game.

The mask should be the most beautiful and cool one in the kindergarten. This requirement requires an extraordinary approach on the part of parents.

Today, together with the children, we will make a mask for the matinee.

Today, together with the children, we will make masks of an elephant, a mother elephant, and a baby elephant with our own hands.

Below are pictures that need to be printed, laminated, cut out along the contour and threaded with twine or elastic to fit the child’s head.

It is also possible to have a strip of cardboard or laminated paper at the bottom of the mask, folded with a rim to fit the child’s head (if you connect not with threads, but with a stapler, then the staples should be directed with their sharp ends outward (so as not to scratch the child’s head)).

To make the mask original, you need to print out the black and white mask templates available here, paint them together with the children with gouache or watercolors and also laminate them, after which you need to thread a string or elastic band to the size of the child’s head or attach the mask to the prepared rim.

DIY elephant costume for a child: master class with step by step description, printable templates for elephant masks for children.

DIY elephant costume for a child

The elephant costume is quite a rare costume for a child. How to make this hero of a masquerade or performance?

From this article you will learn 3 ideas for making a children's elephant costume with your own hands:

  1. How to make a cap mask for an elephant costume on a child’s head.
  2. What parts can an elephant costume for a child consist of?
  3. How to make an elephant mask from paper and printable templates.

Part 1. How to make a mask-cap for an elephant costume with your own hands

The master class is conducted by “Native Path” reader and participant Tatyana Dubovchenko. The organizers of the competition are the “Native Path” website and the magazine

Tatyana writes: “I needed an elephant costume. But I only had to sew at school, and I didn’t have any fabric. But I consider myself a happy owner of a sewing machine and I only have enough for toys and dresses for dolls. And this is the elephant I got. We went with him to a Christmas tree, a themed holiday (he was a mammoth in the ancient world) and to a children’s theater studio in Africa.”

Tools and materials

To make an elephant hat for your costume you will need:

Brown or gray sweater

Cardboard (you can use cardboard instead old rug for yoga or anything else that will help keep your ears stiff)

Shifty eyes (d = 3 cm)

A piece of white felt or any other fabric (size approximately 5 x 8 cm)

Elastic band 2.5 cm wide, 58 cm long

Wire (length approximately 50 cm)

Filler for stuffing the trunk (sintepon or filler for soft toy and pillows)

Glue "Moment"

Scissors

Sewing equipment (thread and needle or sewing machine)

How to sew an elephant hat for a suit

First we will sew elephant mask for children's head (elephant hat).

Step 1. First, find a suitable sweater. It will become the basis for making an elephant hat. I happened to have a brown one, my daughter refused to wear it, the size is about 8-10 years old.

Step 2. You need to cut the sweater along the red lines indicated in the diagram below. On one side of the sweater is the sleeve seam. On the other side of the sweater, cut perpendicularly down from the neck of the sweater about 6-8 cm below the junction of the sleeves.

Step 3. Cut out the details of the elephant's ears.

From the back and front of the sweater, cut out 4 ear pieces. The ears can be drawn in a shape approximately like pears (just draw a shape that is not elongated like that of the conference variety, but more round shape like ordinary garden pears).

The details of the elephant ears are indicated in the diagram below. pink.

Step 4. Making ears for the elephant costume.

We cut out the seal, i.e. cardboard. We make the parts in the shape of the ears, but the fabric parts should be 1-2 cm larger than the cardboard inserts (this is the seam allowance). In the diagram, the fabric part is indicated in pink, the cardboard part in gray.

Instead of cardboard, you can take an old yoga mat or a tourist seat or various packaging seals. The main requirement for a seal is that it holds its shape.

This is important to consider: There should be no cardboard in the place where the ear is sewn to the head, otherwise it will be difficult to sew, to do this, reduce the parts from the seal by another 1 cm only in this place.

We sew the ears together by inserting cardboard inside.

Step 5. Sew the elephant's trunk.

  • We take the part of the sweater that is larger in size (with part of the front and back). We tighten the elastic on the sleeve, wrap it inward and sew it on. We insert the entire length of the wire inside and secure it near the seam on the sleeve with several stitches in several places. Cut off the end and secure it (I bent the tail, twisted it and wrapped it with tape so it wouldn’t prick.
  • Stuffing the sleeve.
  • Sew on a piece of scrap fabric as a patch. The hole in the trunk is closed.

There was a weak wire in my trunk. I had to secure the trunk to my head. Here's how it happened.

Step 6. Assembling the hat for the elephant costume.

We have already stuffed and sewn up one sleeve. Along the line marked in red in the diagram, we sew together two pieces, inserting the finished ears into the cap.

We turn the elastic on the second sleeve into a fringe, making cuts and forming a tassel. This is what you get (see photo below).

Step 7. Decorate the bottom edge of the elephant's cap.

We fold the 6-8 cm that we left (see step 2) and insert an elastic band. The elastic band will not be visible from the front. At the back, the elastic is simply sewn to the edge.

Step 8. Making the elephant's eyes.

The elephant's eye on the costume is simply glued on.

  • We take a piece of white fabric for the backing, it is better to take a fabric that does not crumble like felt, I took a piece of padding polyester. Cut out an oval.
  • Glue the finished moving eye for toys.
  • We cut out the eyelids from scraps of fabric and glue them on.
  • We glue the finished eye with “Moment” onto the elephant’s head. I prefer the “Moment” rather than the hot gun, because... You can move the part a little to the desired place until the glue dries.

The elephant's hat is ready! We put an elephant cap on the child's head. Have fun games and interesting performances! Too-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo, the elephant buzzes.

Part 2. What elements can be used to make an elephant costume for a child?

For an elephant costume, you can use those items of clothing that you have at home:

  • gray turtleneck
  • knitted T-shirt or large T-shirt,
  • gray shorts or tights, skirt.

To create “thickness”, because an elephant is a large animal, you can use a small pillow that is placed under the child’s T-shirt.

You can put mittens on your child's hands gray with elastic band and pink appliqué. The feet may have shoe covers made of fabric, also with pink appliqué.

Part 3. DIY paper elephant mask

The elephant mask does not have to be sewn. You can make it very simply and quickly from paper and cardboard.

Option 1 for making an elephant mask: a mask with an elastic band

Step 1. Print out the mask template. You need to print the template taking into account the head size of the child or adult who will play the role of the elephant.

It is better to make a sketch of the mask on a piece of paper in advance, try it on, measure the required height and length of the mask, and mark where the holes for the eyes will be. And after that, print the template taking into account these dimensions.

Step 2. Glue the mask onto thick cardboard.

Step 3. We make slits for the eyes.

Step 4. Use a hole punch to make slits on the sides for the elastic. Insert the rubber band. The mask is ready.

Option 2 for making an elephant mask: mask - paper headband

This is the easiest and fastest option to make. masks will do everyone and does not require any preliminary measurements.

Step 1. A headband is made from thick cardboard to fit the child’s head. Please note - the headband must be sewn or glued, but in no case secured with a pin, because a pin is a sharp object.

Step 2. Glue a picture of an elephant to the rim (see templates below). The headband is a mask for a game or for a performance, ready!

Just as theater begins with a hanger, so a cheerful masquerade begins with carnival mask. Feather, fabric, paper - they perfectly complement New Year's costumes.

The “birth” of the carnival mask occurred in ancient times, when ancient sacred harvest festivals were celebrated. Later, in the Middle Ages, the carnival turned into a secular holiday, and masks became an integral part of it. In Russia, the masquerade tradition strengthened under Peter the Great. Since then New Year can't do without cheerful, funny caps and masquerade masks.

In our online store you can buy not only ready-made New Year's masks for children and adults, but also creative kits for creating your own original mask. This hat will perfectly complement the image of a buffoon, clown and other funny characters.

On New Year's parties Fairy-tale scenes with the participation of animals are often played out. This is where they come in handy animal hats- soft muzzles made of faux fur. They are more convenient than masks.

Carnival children's masks made of paper are closely associated in our minds with matinees in kindergarten, New Year trees, holidays when you can become anyone: a bunny, a wolf, a bear, etc. Moreover, to designate an image, it is not necessary to completely cover the face with a carefully drawn muzzle of the animal: conventional designations that you can make with your own hands are enough.

For example, paper chicken masks can depict a beak and muzzle. DIY paper carnival masks for children today are not a problem at all. They can also be used for everyday role playing games, and for performances during holidays in kindergarten, and even for finger games, arrange a home theater.

What are they needed for?

Why do children even need carnival masks?

Some psychologists believe that theatrical performances in childhood bad game, citing the fact that children learn to lie and hide their true face behind a mask in the broader sense of the word.

However, when wearing carnival masks made of paper, depicting fairy tale heroes, kids are not inclined to lie: they believe that they really are some kind of animal or fairy-tale hero.

Therefore, homemade paper masks, and in a broader sense - role-playing games and theater - contribute to the development of children's creative and artistic abilities, rather than the degradation of consciousness. Based on them, you can arrange a theater for young children in a kindergarten.

Such a theater will contribute to the development of speech and creativity. The theater can be arranged on the basis kindergarten: Children wear homemade carnival masks and imagine a simple story based on their favorite holiday tales. Parents will probably enjoy watching a short performance.

What exactly does the use of masks for children and doing them with your own hands improve in a child? educational process?

First of all, imagination. To play a hero, you need to imagine him, understand how he speaks and acts. Carnival masks, as an element of role-playing games, develop speech, making it intonationally rich and varied; along with acting skills, facial expressions, gestures, and movements are enriched. If you are using homemade masks in finger games, then you develop fine motor skills, extremely beneficial for the brain. In such games, the child himself acts as the director of a mini-play, creating the plot of the performance and applying the skills of logical connection of phenomena. Even an adult, putting on a mask, immediately feels the atmosphere of a holiday, an extravaganza, not to mention children.

Selection of materials

How to do it yourself?

If you decide to organize a home theater or are going to a matinee, you can make carnival masks for children from paper with your own hands. This does not require unique skills and abilities.

If you are good at sewing yourself, then make a mask out of fabric, cutting it out according to a template, and eyes, nose, etc. make it from available materials (buttons, ribbons, shreds). If you rarely hold a needle in your hands, we offer the simplest option: children's masks made of paper. All of us adults probably know how to use scissors and glue. On our website we offer you to print out templates and pictures of some masks. You can also cut out pictures from colored paper. Glue on the eyes, nose, mouth. If you had to print out the finished mask, all you have to do is stick it on cardboard, sew a small piece of elastic around the edges, connecting the edges of the mask. This is how you can make headbands. When putting them on, the child can use an elastic band to secure the mask on his head, and it will not fall off. Headbands play an important role. Don't make headbands that are too tight or too loose. The first ones will squeeze the head, and the second ones will be too loose. Headbands should be in moderation and not cause inconvenience. If you decide to prepare a home theater, make sure that nothing disturbs your baby.

You can choose a matching costume for the mask. By the way, you don’t have to buy it or make it from expensive material: everyday clothes are suitable for a suit, which can be decorated or symbolically trimmed with paper outfit elements.

That's all. We put on a suit - and our fairy-tale hero is ready for adventure. Do not deny yourself the pleasure of throwing your child a holiday and a real theater that he will make with his own hands. You need so little for this! Just pictures of fairy tale characters and animals on our website, which make excellent free children's masks. Choose, download, print and play with your kids.
