1 1 Weaving rosaries Usually rosaries are woven from soutache, woolen threads or various types cords. To make 10 knots, approximately 80 cm to 110 cm of material is required, depending on the thickness of the thread. The pictures below show the weaving sequence. To learn and acquire the skill of weaving, it is advisable to choose two cords of different colors. In addition, the work will require beads that differ in size from the completed knots to separate dozens of knots from each other. The holes in the beads should be large enough to allow two or four cords to pass through them. To start weaving, you need to measure the required length of the cord, fold it in half and tie a technological knot in the middle of the cord (Fig. 1), which, after weaving half of the knots, is untied and the second half of the knots are woven. From the outermost knots there should be a cm of cord left to finish the rosary of weaving a cross and a tassel (the so-called Golgotha). It is recommended to master each position until you achieve mechanical skill. The weaving of the first knot is shown in Fig. 2 Fig. 19. Thin arrows indicate the path of pulling the cord in the diagram in question. The thick arrow shows the direction of the cord transfer when moving to the next picture. In Fig. 2 shows the first position. The blue thread passes in front of the index and middle fingers and is pinched with the ring and little fingers. The red thread is wrapped around the index and finger in a clockwise direction, draped over the thumb in a clockwise direction, threaded over the red thread and also clamped with the middle finger and little finger.

2 2 Figure 3 shows the second position. The blue thread is pulled out in a small loop and, without twisting, is put on the thumb. Make sure that both the red and blue threads are held with slight tension by the ring and little fingers. Figure 4 shows the third position. Red loop with thumb pulled to the left, transferred through the blue loop on the same finger and, without shaking, put on the index and middle fingers. After each position, you need to slightly tighten the red and blue working threads, held with your ring finger and little finger.

3 3 Figure 5 shows the fourth position. Pull the blue thread under the red working thread, extending the ring and little fingers, circle the index and middle fingers counterclockwise and pass through the blue loop placed on the thumb. Fig.6. Stretch the same blue working thread under the red working thread, straightening the ring finger and little finger, circle it around the middle finger counterclockwise and stretch it between the index and middle fingers under two blue and red threads, above the red thread coming out of the technological knot. In this case, the thread should be pulled over all the loops located in front of the middle and index fingers and pressed with the ring finger and little finger to the palm.

4 4 Figure 7 shows the sixth position. Wrap the red working thread (see the previous position, bold arrow) around the middle finger counterclockwise, having first straightened the ring finger and little finger, and stretch it between the index and middle fingers next to the blue thread under the three blue, blue and red loops located on the back side , as shown in Fig.6. Press the working threads with your finger and little finger against your palm. Make sure that the technological knot is to the right of the thread being pulled (Fig. 7). Figure 8 shows the seventh position. Unclench your ring finger and put the red loop on it (see previous position, thick arrow), without twisting. Press the working threads into the palm of your hand with your little finger.

5 5 Figure 9 shows the eighth position. Carefully remove all the loops from the index and middle fingers towards your palm, pinch the threads coming out of the technological knot between the index and middle fingers, and, evenly pulling the red and blue working threads and the threads forming the loops, tighten the knot (not very tightly) . Figure 10 shows the ninth position. Remove the loops from the thumb and ring fingers. By stretching the blue and red loops in different directions in the direction of the arrows, pull the knot close to the technological knot.

6 6 Figure 11, Figure 12, Figure 13, Figure 14 shows the step-by-step tightening of the red loop into the working thread. With this constriction, the blue loop and working threads are clamped in the palm of the left hand, and the knot is held with the thumb and forefinger of the left hand. The thick arrow indicates the thread and the direction of the constriction.

7 7 Fig.15, Fig.16, Fig.17, Fig.18 shows the step-by-step constriction of the blue loop into the working thread. With this constriction, the working threads are clamped in the palm of the left hand, and the knot is held with the index and thumb of the left hand. The thick arrow indicates the thread and the direction of the constriction.

8 8 Figure 19, Figure 20 shows the final view of the unit. Pull up the working threads, “scroll” the knot between your thumb and forefinger and untie the technological knot. You can start weaving the second knot of the rosary. After completing 10 knots, both cords are pulled through the hole in the separating bead and then the next ten knots are made. Upon completion of weaving the required number of tens, four cords are pulled into the hole of the bead, two from the beginning of the weaving and two from the end (Fig. 21). A cross is made from four cords, which ends in a so-called tassel. "Calvary". The Fig below shows an option for making a cross and a tassel on a rosary. The cross can be made with the same knots as the rosary. When weaving the first knot of the cross in the sixth position, two additional ones are passed next to the working threads. Then one knot is made from each pair of threads, which form the crossbar. And again two knots are woven with “extra” threads passing through the knot.

9 9 The tassel knot can be made double threads it turns out to be larger than ordinary knots. Place threads around the tassel knot, as shown in Fig. 23. And tighten them with thread at the top of the knot. Bend the upper part of the threads down and tighten them together with the lower part with a thread around the bottom of the knot (Fig. 24). Trim the length of the brush with scissors. Another option for making a cross is weaving in a column. Fig.25, Fig.26, Fig.27, Fig.28, Fig.29 show the step-by-step weaving of one row of a column (five positions). At the end of the fifth position, tighten the working threads so that you get a tight cylindrical row the height of one thread. In this way, weave several doves to the required honeycomb of the upper part of the cross. The crossbar is performed in the same way as in the first version with two knots from two pairs of threads on the left and right. Then two pairs of threads are combined into a bundle and the number of stitches is made so that the lower part of the cross is larger than the upper.

10 10 The brush is performed as in the first option. True, it is better to make a knot under the tassel with two threads, stretching the remaining two “extra” threads through it. The type of cross made in a “column” is shown in Fig. 30.

Beads- This is a ribbon combined into a ring. They are used to count prayers, bows, help focus attention and remind you of the time of prayer. Beads You can buy it in a store or church, but you can also make it yourself. Our step-by-step instruction.

Instructions

1. Measure 5.5 meters of soutache if you need 50 knot rosary beads. The standard length for a leg can be measured as follows: from the shoulder of the left hand to the hand of the right hand. Fold this thread in half, cut it, then fold it in half again to determine the middle. Thus, we will weave the rosary from the middle.

2. Twist the edges of the threads so that they do not interfere with your weaving.

3. Start weaving knots. They are usually woven on the left hand. After you have woven 10 knots, put on a wooden bead. For the convenience of stringing beads, you can make a larger hole with nail scissors.

4. Weave 25 knots using this method. Remember, 5 knots are woven from the middle, after that a bead is put on, after that the beads are put on through 10 knots until the very end. After you have made 25 knots, unwind the other half and continue weaving. At first the bead is 5 knots apart, and then 10 knots later.

5. Weave the finished rosary from below, combine a knot of 4 strands of soutache, after which you will need to attach a cross and a tassel.

6. Make a crossbar. Weave it separately from knots and pass it through the remaining soutache threads. After this, weave 2 knots from 4 threads. When you have combined the rosary from below, you will be left with tails, from which you can weave a cross.

7. Weave a 3cm crossbar separately. from 2 threads of soutache, make knots along the edges, like in a rosary. Unnecessary soutache can be cut off after the knots have been made, now you will get a ring. You can wrap the cross with primitive threads, it will turn out quite beautifully.

8. Weave 2 more knots from 4 threads below the cross. Now between these two knots you need to cut 10 pieces of soutache, 10-15 cm in length. Wrap soutache threads with ordinary threads.

9. Trim the excess threads so that the tassel is the length you need.

10. Weave a cross from 4 threads, weave it crosswise. It is allowed to use beads when weaving a cross. You can also wrap the cross in woolen threads; it is believed that devils are afraid of wool.

11. Learn about the meaning of distinct. Beads of 30 knots and 3 beads (33) - indicate the years of Christ’s life on Earth. The cross is a reminder of the torment of Christ, and the brush reminds of Calvary. Some rosaries are woven from colored soutache, say, from red - Easter and martyrdom.

No one really knows by whom and for what reason the very first beads, appeared in the 2nd millennium BC. in India. In many religions, they are used to count the number of prayers read and bows made. Central Asian shamans, for example, actually used in their rituals not a tambourine, but beads, with the help of which they wondered about the future and death. This spiritual sign must be applied according to every rule and with every seriousness.

Instructions

1. The rosary of different religions is very similar in appearance. This is a ribbon or cord on which grain beads are strung, separated from each other by knots. The rosary is invariably closed in a ring - this is a magical symbol that accumulates power and symbolizes the apogee of hope.

2. The number of beads varies among different religions. In Buddhism beads consist of 108 grains, the additional, largest bead is called “meru”. Catholic beads-rosaries consist of 50 or 64 beads, Hindu - of 108, 54 or 50 beads, Muslim beads- from 99, 33 or 11 beads, Orthodox - from 33 beads.

3. Various objects can be distinct at the end: in Orthodoxy - a cross and a tassel, in Catholicism - a cross, in Buddhism - two tassels and beads, in Hinduism - two identical tassels, in Islam - a small stone and a tassel.

4. In Hinduism beads used for reading mantras. You need to count the beads from the first one clockwise. After reading the mantra 108 times, you will again find yourself on the main bead, from which you count in the opposite direction.

5. Hold the rosary in your left hand, on the middle finger, move it with your huge finger, combining the ring, little and middle fingers together - this symbolizes overcoming the physical world and the transition to the spiritual world.

6. At first, be careful not to touch your index finger clearly - it symbolizes egocentrism, which you must get rid of. Over time, your index finger will help move the beads.

7. Read the peace-loving malas by placing your hand on the heart tier. Mantras of strength and wealth are recited at the navel level.

8. When working with Christian beads, repeat one prayer on one bead until the cycle of the specified number of prayers, bows and making the sign of the cross is completed. Once completed, hang it up beads to the icons if you prayed at home, or put it in your pocket if you read a prayer in church.

9. In Japan, fingering with distinctly different fingers is used to influence different areas of the body: the thumb and index finger facilitate headache, large and medium - relieve rage and depression, large and nameless - increase stability to pressure changes. If you crumple beads each palm, the functioning of all organs of the body is normalized.

10. In Islam, 11 beads clearly convey one prayer, consisting of exactly 11 parts. On the crosspiece, later than the eleventh bead, the prayer position changes.

Note!
Keep your rosary clean by periodically rinsing it in running water. Do not give your rosary to other people, do not use them as an abacus and do not fiddle with them in vain.

Helpful advice
Sorting out different materials (sandalwood, cypress, copper, amber, rock crystal, juniper) helps treat joint diseases, calms the nervous system, and has a positive effect on the brain.

The use of clearly has a great philosophical and spiritual meaning. Mala - this is how rosaries are correctly called in accordance with Buddhist philosophy - refer to religious objects, the main purpose of which is communication with the highest sacred mind, japa, which is achieved by reading a special form of address, or prayer, mantra.

If you look closely at the rosary, it becomes clear that they are all united by a solid system of one hundred and eight beads, strung on a thread and separated from each other by small knots. A bead in a rosary is called a grain, and the combination of a bead and a knot is called a step.

Embodied matter

It is 108 beads that are a symbol of the visible matter surrounding an ordinary person. The one hundred and ninth bead is considered the original separator, the intersection of which in the process of reading the mantra indicates the loss of the meaning of each conversion procedure. Therefore, the mantra is read by scrupulously sorting the beads in a clockwise direction, periodically turning over the rosary so as not to break the so-called wheel of Samsara, that is, not to cross the central one, one hundred and ninth element. It is interesting that the number 108 was not chosen by chance; tea, adding up all the numbers that make up this magical number, we get nine, which in religious mythology denotes being and integrity, symbolizes the sacred preface that touches everyone, which primitive mortals could just think. Among other things, it is symbolic that the ancient scriptures say that the Universe consists of 108 elements, which carry the highest preface, and the diameter of the Sun is approximately 108 times larger than the diameter of our planet. The distance from the Earth to the Moon does not exceed the same 108 Moons, and the distance from the Earth to the Sun, as one might guess, is 108 Luminaries, lined up one after another. Rosary beads are famous in almost every monotheistic religion, but in Judaism they contain 99 beads, in Christianity - 50.

Human passions and mathematics

Of particular importance to the number 108 is the treatise on human passions, which, according to Buddhism, a person has neither more nor less than 108. Assuming that everyone living on this earth has five different senses and intellect, to which are connected a certain skill that divides perception into pleasant and unpleasant sensations and a neutral attitude, multiplying the numbers denoting the above-described ideas among themselves and doubling the resulting value in connection with two acceptable outcomes of any situation - bliss and rejection, you will get the number 36. Now you need to transfer the magic number to three planes - the past, the future and real, and the familiar number 108 appears again.

Nowadays, rosaries, despite their belonging to objects of religious worship, are increasingly used as ordinary decorations. A sort of fashion statement with a religious twist. Meanwhile, this object has an absolutely definite direct purpose.

In appearance, ordinary or slightly exotic beads - rosaries - owe their origin and existence to religion. Moreover, there is more than one religion in the distance. Rosaries are widespread in Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam.

The main function of the rosary

In all religions the main role was approximately identical. They served, so to speak, as a counter for read prayers or ideal various ritual actions. In addition, it is believed that the rosary helps to focus the believer’s attention on prayer, and also symbolizes the repetition of life and the endless power of God. In all religions, rosaries also have a symbolic meaning that only belongs to a given belief.

The role is distinct in different religions

In Christianity, rosary beads originated in the fourth century AD. in Palestine. They consisted of 33 beads made from fruit seeds and their number corresponded to the number of years lived by Christ. In Rus', the number of grains in the rosary increased to one hundred. True, depending on its purpose, these rosary could contain from 20 to 150 beads. Among Catholics, the rosary is called the rosary (the apogee of spring from roses). They contain 50 beads and are divided into 5 decades. However, for some Catholic peoples and religious concessions, these rosaries have their own characteristics. For example, among the Basques, the rosary is made in the form of a ring that is worn on the finger. And it consists of a cross and 10 grains. Among the Franciscans, on the contrary, the number of beads is increased to seventy. Currently, in Catholicism, rosaries are considered a church accessory. Muslims have rosaries of 2 types: round and flat. Flat ones consist of strung squares and rectangles and resemble a desk calendar. In round rosaries, the number of beads is invariably identical - 99. That is how many names Allah has. These rosary are divided by bridges of 11 beads. This is due to the number of indispensable parts of the Muslim prayer. Space, fire, air, earth and water are designated by five multi-colored threads in Buddhist traditions. 108 beads made from yak bone are strung on these threads. The beads are divided by jumpers into 3 equal parts. A huge pearl is used as a lock on these rosaries, symbolizing the sign of Buddha. In the modern world, rosaries are often used as ordinary decorations. Large rosaries are worn instead of beads on the neck, and small ones on the wrist. It is believed that they have the power of a talisman, and some of them, made from a certain material, are also capable of protecting against many dangerous diseases.

Rosary - beads made of wood, bone, stone or other materials, strung on a cord. The area of their use is religious prayers repeated repeatedly. Christians, Buddhists and Muslims exclusively often use them so as not to lose count during prayer. Weaving is not particularly difficult; you just need a few beads of various sizes and a long thin cord. However, this is more likely not weaving, but lowering.

You will need

  • 50 beads with a diameter of 5-10 mm;
  • 36 beads with a diameter of 10-15 mm;
  • 4 beads with a diameter of 15-20 mm;
  • 1 long bead;
  • Cord made of unnatural material.

Instructions

1. Place all the beads and beads on the cord in the following order: eight small beads - a long bead, then a tiny bead - a medium bead (nine times) - a tiny bead - a huge bead - again a series of nine small and medium beads and so on until the end.

2. Once you have collected all the beads, pass through the long bead and small beads to create a loop. Its base is a long bead. Tie the ends of the cord so that the knot is not visible, cut off the excess and burn it. You can twirl the rosary

And today, many Orthodox churches sell special prayer beads that help you focus on prayer. However, if you plan to choose a rosary specifically for prayer purposes, you need to take into account several criteria. To begin with, it is better to choose small rosaries, for 30 knots or beads - for every prayer bead. In this case, it is recommended to purchase rosaries either in a monastery or in a church. It is believed that the rosary must be woven with prayer and the blessing of the priest. But Orthodox priests recommend consecrating even the “prayed” rosary purchased in the monastery, having received a blessing from the parish clergyman to use this main religious sign. Because prayers with rosaries are not suitable to be done in public, for prayer purposes it is better to prefer silent rosaries - wooden or wicker.

2. How fashion accessory rosaries began to be used relatively recently. Such rosaries differ from Orthodox ones in the absence of the symbol of the cross and can be made from the most various materials: semi-precious stones, metals, beads, lotus seeds, ivory, wooden or glass beads tied with threads. Purchased as a fashion accessory or a means of calming, concentrating and relieving stress, rosary beads are chosen mainly based on price and aesthetic criteria. Decorative rosary beads can be an authentic and practical gift. As a gift, aromatic rosaries or rosaries with fine, virtuoso carvings on bone or wood are extremely attractive. For a man, it is better to prefer plain, dark-colored rosaries made of semi-precious stones, say, agate or hematite. Women's rosaries can be made in the form of jewelry and serve both as rosaries and as stylish decoration. For example, typical Catholic rosaries are often worn as a spectacular decoration around the neck.

Rosaries are woven from soutache of any color. If you focus on the further sale of woven rosaries, then you need to keep in mind that they will be bought mainly by monastics. And they need a black rosary with 100 beads. At Easter, nuns may have white or red rosaries in their hands. For Trinity - green. And for the Assumption BM - blue or blue rosary. Worldly people buy rosaries of any color and size. Both for 30 beads and for 50 beads. They buy everything, the main thing is that it’s knitted. For the worldly, you can weave from both synthetics and wool. There are no knitted rosaries for open sale in Russia.
Usually rosaries are woven from soutache, woolen threads or various types of cords. To make 10 knots, approximately 80 cm to 110 cm of material is required, depending on the thickness of the thread. To learn and acquire the skill of weaving, it is advisable to choose two cords of different colors. In addition, the work will require beads that differ in size from the completed knots to separate dozens of knots from each other...
Description of the whole process:
Measure the soutache 5.5 meters, if you need a rosary for 50 knots, for example, if for 100, then 11 m, usually measured from the shoulder of the left arm and to the right to the end of the right hand...
Then they fold this thread of soutache in half, cut the thread, then in half again, so that the middle is - tie it in a loop and twist half with 2 threads of soutache, so as not to interfere with weaving on the other side, i.e. you need to weave the rosary from the middle, it’s more convenient :).
The edges of the threads can also be twisted so that they do not interfere with weaving.
Knots are usually woven on the left hand... 10 knots are woven, string a wooden bead, the hole can be drilled deeper with nail scissors and the soutache can be pushed through using a not too large gypsy needle.
When 25 knots are woven, note: 5 knots are woven from the middle and then a bead, and to the end in dozens. After 25 knots are ready, unwind the second half and remove the loop, continuing to weave 5 knots in the middle on the other side, so that there are 10, then a bead and tens.
The finished rosary is woven at the bottom, i.e. a knot is woven from 4 threads of soutache at the ends, then a cross and a tassel are attached. This is a separate operation and the cross is woven according to your imagination.
You can separately weave the crossbar from knots and pass it through the remaining threads that hold the rosary together, then weave 2 knots at the end of 4 threads, wrap a strong thread around the entire cross with the crossbar, and attach the tassel to the last knot of 4 threads.
P.S. The cross can be woven from the remaining soutache threads, which should not be cut off when you have connected the finished rosary!
First, you will get a knot from 4 threads of soutache, then weave a small knot from two threads of soutache and before tightening it inside, pass the remaining two threads and then tighten, then make a distance of about 4 cm or as you want less or more, the same weave a small knot from two threads of soutache and pass the remaining two threads of soutache inside.
A crossbar is woven separately on two threads of soutache about 3 cm long so that there are knots along the edges like in a rosary, the excess soutache is cut off after the knots, you get a ring inside if you expand it.
After that, the spangled distance of the rosary is threaded inside the crossbar and you can insert a match or 1 small nail without a head into the middle of the soutache vertically and wrap the cross with the strung crossbar with simple threads, giving it its shape, this is a simple and beautiful option. This means that after you have made a cross from knots, you should have 4 more threads left and from them you add 2 knots below the cross into four threads of soutache, they will be large, just like in the place where you connected the rosary, if you weaved from the middle.
Between two large knots, you separately cut the soutache about 10-15 cm in length, 10 pieces or more (you can wrap the soutache around a small book of prayer and cut it on both sides) and cover the cross with it so that in the middle of the covered soutache you can tie the soutache with ordinary threads threads between two large knots.
Then you lower the soutache threads from the cross down, it turns out that the threads will be on top of one large knot of the second, i.e. the last one and wrap the tassel on top with ordinary threads, which turned out to be attached to the knot.
Then you cut off the excess threads so that the brush is the right size. The cross is also woven from 4 threads of soutache “cross to cross”; each thread is overlapped in turn and the crossbar is also made separately, but the knots at the edges are usually woven first. You can make a cross from beads, i.e. When you connect the rosary, then string a bead. Then separately make a crossbar from knots along the edges and beads on one side and the other with a distance and pass the bottom of the rosary through the crossbar.
Next, string 2 beads and weave two large knots from the 4 soutache remaining from the rosary to attach the brush between them.
A brush can be made from woolen threads for soutache rosaries; in the monastery, the monks say that demons are afraid of wool (the same effect of a hair shirt on a naked body in ancient times reminds them, and some monks beat themselves with woolen rosaries or whips).
It’s good to sprinkle with holy water with this brush. The meaning of the rosary is different.
30 knots with 3 beads - means the years of life on Earth of Jesus Christ and the Ladder of John Climacus.
At 50 - it reminds of the 50th psalm and Pentecost, at 70 - in honor of the 70 apostles, at 90 - in honor of the 9 ranks of the Archangels and the 90th psalm, at 100 - the Lord's - classic monastic rosary, at 150 - the Mother of God, there are also 12 small knots in honor of the 12 apostles and 300 - Athos. The cross is a reminder of the Lord’s suffering on the cross, and the brush also reminds of Calvary. The rosaries of bishops and abbots are usually woven from colored soutache for festive vestments:
red - Easter and Martyr's, green - Trinity and Palm, blue - Mother of God, white - Lord's, yellow or gold - saintly and all saints, and black - monastic or violet.

Quite often in everyday life we come across such a concept as “rosary beads”. Many people have no idea what the purpose of this attribute is. This article discusses the history and purpose of rosaries, and also describes how to properly weave rosaries.

What is a rosary?

Rosary - ribbons or dense threads closed in a circle with knots tied on them, various beads or decorated with other decorative or ecclesiastical elements. Used in various religions, for example, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism. The name itself comes from the word “count” (“honor”), that is, to make some kind of calculation. Most often they are a dense cord on which beads are strung and a cross is attached.

Origin story

The most ancient mentions of rosaries go back to the 2nd millennium. India is considered the birthplace of origin. In Christianity, it is very difficult to find out the specific date of their appearance. Not a single church book of early times, especially the Bible, contains any words about rosaries. Neither what they are nor what they were used for at that time. From this we can make a presumptive conclusion that in early Christianity there was no such attribute at all.

The appearance of rosaries in Christianity is associated with Anthony of Egypt and Pachomius the Great. Their students were not always educated; many could not even write or read properly. But they studied church work. In order for Pachomius' students to remember the prayer (Address to Jesus), he forced his students to repeat these lines a certain number of times every day. But since his students thought poorly, they were given a rope. After each time the prayer was read, the students tied one knot in their rope.

In addition to this version, there are also thoughts that the appearance of the rosary is associated with Basil the Great, who lived in Caesarea. Before he passed away, he left a will in which he mentioned the sacred rope, the meaning and significance of which must be respected.

Purpose of the rosary

The main purpose is connected with the church, since the rosary is a church attribute. This meaning lies in the fact that they serve to count the prayers read. In order not to get confused during the service or ordinary daily prayer, rosaries were and are used. The number of beads or knots on them is the required number of prayers to read. Even Basil the Great pointed out that the rosary serves to pray to God himself. The monks have an unusual name - “spiritual sword”. The main prayer is the Jesus Prayer.

Peculiarities

The rosary has many interesting and important features, which reflect some parts of the historical and religious part of this church attribute. Among the main features are:

  1. An object that will be located at the very end of the rosary. This item will reflect the canons of religion. In Orthodoxy, a tassel and a small cross will be attached to the end. In Catholicism it will only be a cross. In Buddhism, these are also tassels alternating in a certain order with beads. In Islam, there is a stone at the end of the rosary. And among the Old Believers, on their rosary you can see a triangle, which symbolizes the Holy Trinity.
  2. Symbols. If you know the purpose of each symbol, you can better understand the essence of religion. In Christianity it is the mystical garden of the Mother of God, in Buddhism it is the wheel of Samsara, in Hinduism it is the cyclical nature of time.
  3. Number of beads. In Buddhism this number will reach 108, since there were 108 Brahmins. In Christianity there will be from 10 to 160 beads. In Hinduism there are 32, 64 or 108. In Islam, the number of beads will be 99: they are divided into links, a total of 3 links of 33 beads each.

Design

You need to know the design in order to properly learn how to weave rosaries. In this matter, three main components can be distinguished.

  1. A thread, knot or cord serves as the basis for the entire product. Beads and other attributes are strung on a thread, and knots are also tied. Those who adhere to Tantric Buddhism generally create a thread from 5 different colors at once (blue, white, red, green, yellow), these colors represent five different elements (fire, water, space, air and earth).
  2. Various separating elements. This is most often used to separate a certain number of beads from each other.
  3. Pendants. These include religious crosses, pebbles and tassels. You can also use larger beads as pendants. Or beads that differ in color from the rest.

Necessary materials

In order to weave a rosary with your own hands, you need to prepare all the materials necessary for this.

  1. A thread. It is best to use a thick thread or cord that will not break. Sometimes they even use elastic bands, thanks to which the product can stretch.
  2. Beads. It is worth dwelling on them in more detail, because they can be from the very different materials. Rosaries are made from the following types of beads: bread, glass, ebonite, polymer clay, wood. If weaving rosaries is new to you, then it is better to use the most ordinary beads. It is necessary to choose a color and size.
  3. Attributes: crosses, pebbles, tassels.
  4. Pins - these will help when stringing beads onto your base.
  5. Scissors.

Step-by-step instruction

How does weaving work? Orthodox rosary? For production you will need:

  • stone beads;
  • metal beads;
  • chain;
  • cross;
  • dense thread;
  • separators (aka caps for beads);
  • pins;
  • water;
  • scissors.

If desired, you can also use glue. It will take you from one to two hours to create such rosaries. Next you need to follow the instructions provided:

  1. Take exactly 33 beads. This number is used in Christianity, as it is associated with the life span of Christ on Earth. You can take another quantity, but it must be a multiple of twelve or ten. You use 30 beads mainly in a circle, and the remaining three to create the so-called “tail”, on which you also place a cross.
  2. Since the beads are made of such a difficult material as stone, you need to lower them into a bowl of water, and then use an awl to slightly widen the holes in them. Remove all sharp corners. It is desirable that these holes for all beads be equal in size.
  3. The stage of assembling the rosary. Take a thick thread and place one metal bead on it. Then, after the bead, place a chain with a cross on it.
  4. Thick thread needs to be threaded into a metal bead. Thus, you should get a loop, and the cross will be a separate element attached to the rosary. Tie a strong knot. You can pour glue on it to make the product stronger and not fall apart. Cut off any excess.
  5. Weaving a rosary requires attention and concentration, so you need to carefully monitor the number of beads used. Next you just need to string the stone beads. They can be separated using separators of 11 beads, for example. Here, everyone’s personal desire is more important. The end result can be secured with bead caps. Also secure everything with glue.
  6. The beads must have room to move freely along the cord or thread. To do this, leave 1-2 cm between each wooden bead.
  7. All threaded beads need to be secured again by tying a knot, then put on another metal bead. An important point follows - the thread is threaded into the tube, after which the entire product is again secured with a knot.
  8. The rosary has already acquired its final form. You just need to tie a couple more strong knots. Your Orthodox rosary is ready. Weaving did not turn out to be difficult, but it did require time and attention.

Basic mistakes

Weaving rosaries, although it seems simple, is also accompanied by many mistakes. Especially for beginners.

  1. Some wear a rosary bracelet on their arm. How to weave these correctly? It's simple. Weaving occurs as with ordinary rosaries, but many do not take into account the fact that difficulties may arise when putting such a bracelet on a hand. If you use regular thread, it will not stretch. Many people make the mistake that when making a bracelet in the form of a rosary, beginners use a regular thread or cord. IN in this case You need a tight rubber band. This way you will get a nice rosary bracelet for your hand. How to weave? This question will no longer seem so scary.
  2. Using too bright colors. We must not forget that rosary beads are a church and religious attribute. It is better to approach the making of rosaries intelligently, without using too bright color combinations.
  3. The cross and tassel must correspond to the size of the future rosary. If you take them too large, the rosary will be bulky and sloppy.
  4. Many beginners buy untreated stone beads. This is a mistake, since it will be quite difficult to bring them to the proper form on your own.

After you have learned about the main mistakes when weaving rosaries, you should familiarize yourself with important tips. Some of them are presented below.

  1. If you decide to use 4-strand rosary weaving, then you should choose small beads so that the final version does not look huge. The optimal size would be 5-6 millimeters.
  2. Some people prefer to weave a cross from rosary threads with their own hands. To do this, professionals advise using 4 silk ribbons, each 1 m long. The type of weaving does not matter.
  3. If you want to make a rosary from a material such as plexiglass, then craftsmen advise buying it whole at various construction markets. There the material is cheaper, and there is enough of it for several products at once.
  4. Most often, beginners make Orthodox rosaries with their own hands. Weaving them from beads is not so difficult, since the amount of symbolism is much less than in the rosary of other religions. Here, beginners are advised to adhere to the rule: the simpler, the better. Making rosaries from complex materials takes much more effort, time and material resources than weaving the most ordinary Orthodox rosary, for example, from wooden beads.

Price

Making rosaries is a fairly inexpensive activity in material terms. Of course, it all depends on the materials chosen. If the price of ordinary wooden beads ranges from 50-100 rubles, depending on the quantity, the price of a plexiglass rosary will be much higher. The plexiglass itself in a hardware store will cost at least 500 rubles, not counting consumables such as tapes, threads and other paraphernalia.

Weaving rosaries from soutache will cost more than from ordinary wooden beads. Soutache is used instead of thread, and its cost will be about 60 rubles per 20 meters. But this does not count the beads that you will also use.
